Technology Standard III: Legal, Social and Ethical Issues
Demonstrate an understanding of the legal, social and ethical issues related to technology use:
Identify ethical and legal issues using technology.
Analyze issues related to the uses of technology in educational settings.
Establish classroom policies and procedures that ensure compliance with copyright law, Fair Use guidelines, security, privacy and student online protection.
Use classroom procedures to manage an equitable, safe and healthy environment for students.
The assignment for this technology standard greatly enhanced my understanding of the legal, social and ethical issues a teacher must always be aware of in the classroom and the school setting. Before completing this assignment, I believe that I was fairly competent with the correct crediting of sources when I used other peoples ideas and intellectual property. However, I had no idea of the extent to which copyright and fair use guidlines extended to teachers and students. This project made me aware of how I am permitted to use information in the classroom and provided and excellent reference source for specific details. In addition, this project reinforced the fact that as a classroom teacher, I must always be diligent in my observations for potental issues that can affect from a social and safety standpoint. If you are aware of potential issues, you will recognize them in your classroom and will be prepared to handle them appropriately.
As a teacher, I plan on presenting and reviewing this information to my students whenever the have a class project that has the potential for them to use information that they did not create or that is not in the publice domain. In addition, it would be an excellent idea to have a classroom poster as a quick reference source for copyright and fair use guidelines. Every teacher should utilize their school's media specialist as a "go to" source for any questions on this topic. Classroom teachers can also utilize the media specialist to conduct an initial lesson on copyright and fair use guidelines. Since students may not perceive this as one of the most interesting topics to cover, a classroom teacher can make the lesson more engaging by incorporating the material into a Power Point game, such a Jeopardy.
